When the World Bank announced The "schooling without learning" crisis in Africa in 2017, many African Educators, parents and policymakers treated it like a sudden emergency but It wasn't.Africa’s schooling without learning" Crisis did not originate in the 21st century; it had been structurally engineered about fifty years before.2017 was not the birth of the crisis, but its unmasking.When African nations gained independence in the 1960s, they inherited colonial education systems that were never designed for quality learning.Consequently, The "schooling without learning" crisis was an inevitable structural certainty, and far from a 21st century failure.It was a 1960 structure working exactly as was designed to be.2017 was just its official diagnosis.And since then, global donors, policymakers, educators and parents have unconsciously focused on treating the symptoms, while ignoring the root cause of Africa’s weak education system.Today, I want us to have the courage to confront the true cause - and to adopt a system worthy of the African child.
The Root Cause of Africa’s Schooling Without Learning Crisis
We are misdiagnosing Africa's Education crisis when we blame implementation at the level of the teacher.The root cause of the weak education system of Africa is a catastrophic misalignment between three fields:1) The Science of Education,
2) The Science of Learning,
3) The Science of Incentives.
THE science of Learning
The Science of Learning is all about HOW the human brain actually learns. Not how we think it learns. Not how we wish it learns. But how it biologically processes and stores information.The Science of Learning boils down to three unbreakable laws:1️⃣ Brain (Learning is Physical)2️⃣ Memory (Learning is Limited):3️⃣ Connection (Learning is Contextual):The African Education Model is weak because it goes against all three laws of learning and treats learning as magical, unlimited, and isolated, completely disconnected from the child’s reality.It is a system built in total violation of the science of the human mind and that’s why Africa is experiencing a learning crisis.
THE science of Education
Science of Education focuses on what is taught, how it is taught, and what is measured. It is about how schooling is designed from curriculum, pedagogy, assessment, buildings, books, devices etc.Africa’s current educational architecture still uses the 1960 Industrial era playbook optimized for low order cognitive capabilities and completely excludes learning science from its blueprint, hence, the schooling without learning crisis.
THE science of Incentives
The Science of Incentives is all about human motivation. It is simply the study of WHY human beings do what they do.Not what we hope they will do out of good manners. Not what we wish they would do out of patriotism.But what they are structurally driven to do to survive and win.Africa’s education architecture is incentivized for enrollment, attendance, sitting instead of actual competence and deep learning. The rules of the game pay for presence, not performance.This misaligned incentive structure is the exact engine behind our schooling without learning crisis.
Why African Education is Failing by Design?
The African education crisis is not an accident.
